We are delighted to report to you that our Commission Ecology, Justice and Peace on 11 February organised a zoom conference with leading figures spreading the message of Pope Francis’s challenging 2015 document, Laudato Si’, on social justice and the climate crisis.
With help from Jacqui Rémond, a consultant on our EJP Commission, we arranged for Sister Sheila Kinsey, FCJM to speak at our Zoom meeting. Sr Sheila is the Executive Co-Secretary of the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation joint commission of USG (Union of Superiors General, of men) and UISG (International Leaders Superiors General, of female orders). Based in Rome, she is also coordinator of the UISG campaign “Sowing Hope for the Planet”.
Formerly director of Catholic Earthcare Australia, Jacqui Rémond is co-founder of the Global Catholic Climate Movement and a Laudato Si’ consultant. She was also appointed by Pope Francis as Joint Coordinator of the Ecology Taskforce Vatican Covid-19 Commission.
Jacqui in interview with Sr Sheila talked about how the Pope has endorsed a seven-year program to help mobilise international action to stave off the catastrophic social and environmental consequences of accelerating climate change. Pope Francis is urging all sectors in the Church to spread awareness of the looming threats and to respond as effectively as possible. He is appealing especially to religious orders and networks like the Redemptorists, as Sr Sheila explains in this YouTube interview (39 mins) with Jacqui: Laudato Si’ Goals , a Q&A with Jacqui Remond & Sr Sheila Kinsey.
Our confrere in Perth, Tim Tapoona, introduced to our zoom gathering Fr Michael Keraf CSsR, Director of the Donders Social Foundation in the city of Weetebula in Sumba Island (Indonesia). Using a powerpoint presentation and compelling photos, Michael outlined the startling range of social issues confronting the Donders Social Foundation.
Participants in the zoom conference, including the Provincial of Oceania Province, Fr John Hodgson, then discussed the implications for us in promoting the concerns of Laudato Si’ in the Indo-Pacific regions. (41 mins). Click for Fr Michael Molan Keraf CSsR ~ Going beyond borders.
Our EJP Commission will meet shortly, and consider how we might broaden the conversation among ourselves, reflecting on our own experiences in the light of the Gospel values so well articulated by Pope Francis, to see what God’s Holy Spirit might be asking of us at this critical time.
Meanwhile we would greatly welcome your feed-back, comments and suggestions. Please feel free to comment below.
