Daily Angelus

The Angelus is a prayer. When praying it we recall that God has really entered into human experience. This traditional prayer of the Church arose in the early 14th century and was originally prayed around sunset. In later centuries it was prayed also at sunrise, and later again it was prayed at midday, in total three times per day.

The Angelus "despite the passing of centuries retains an unaltered value and an intact freshness." (Pope Paul VI, Marialtis Cultus, 1974)

Just once each day you may care to return here and pray the Angelus. The music is by Franz Biebl and performed here by the renowned Chanticleer.

Ave Maria

Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae
Et concepit de Spiritu Sancto.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus

Ecce ancilla Domini
Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus

Et verbum caro factum est
Et habitavit in nobis

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora pro nobis peccatoribus nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

The Angel of the Lord announced to Mary,
And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus

Behold the handmaiden of the Lord;
Do to me according to your word.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus

And the Word was made flesh
And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

In silence pray:

Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord, Amen.
